Sixth Lens—Social Context Artifacts II (Artifact Research Notes)

Setting Up the Room (group task)—Students will be directed to post their artifacts around the classroom or lecture hall at the beginning of the lesson. One representative from each group will go to a wall and post their group’s artifact. Each posted artifact must clearly indicate the group’s number (i.e., from 1 to 25). At least one group member must stay with their group’s artifact during the gallery walk (subsequent activity). The students who stay with their group’s artifact must be prepared to explain the artifact.

Gallery Walk (group task)—Once artifacts are posted and each group has at least one member ready to share, the mingling research work will begin. During the gallery walk, group members are to step around the learning space, examine the artifacts, and inquire about them. Before beginning this activity, explain to students that they will gather information about the artifacts. As they mingle and research, they need to take notes that they will then use to develop a piece of writing that connects TDDW to its social milieu. The gallery walk is not a competitive activity. Groups work together to make sure they carefully investigate at least three artifacts. Explain to students that they should divvy up the artifacts so each student in the group will gather detailed information about different artifacts.

Artifact Research Notes (group task)—After each group gathers information about three or more artifacts, they should get together and compile their notes in preparation for portfolio item 7. Set a timeline to prepare the class for this transition, and provide time warnings throughout the gallery walk to ensure students are prepared for the transition. Stress that the quality of detail is more important than quantity of artifacts. Students may refine their notes after class if they so desire. Groups are to bring their artifact notes to class for the following activity.
